What Does Sustainability Mean?

We hear the word a lot these days.
According to dictionary.com, Sustainability means either:
1. The ability to be sustained, supported, upheld, or confirmed.
2. (Environmental Science) The quality of not being harmful to the environment or depleting natural resources, and thereby supporting long-term ecological balance:

Funnily enough, I have found that these two aspects are inseparable. When most people think of, or hear the word sustainability nowadays, they think of it in environmental terms.

And you can start with caring for the environment – but if you neglect yourself in the process, all your efforts will be in vain. I guess I see this time and time again. Tireless environmental campaigners that don’t care for themselves in some fundamental way.

Six years ago, I came to the realisation that something in my life wasn’t working and was unsustainable. So, I made a brave and bold decision to change anything and everything in my life that wasn’t working. I committed to transform whatever I needed to, in order to live more sustainably. That turning point was sparked by a personal health crisis, and deciding to listen deeply to what my body said, led to a personal revolution that has turned my life on its head (thank god); and it has created in me a fascination for understanding the essence of sustainably living.

What is Sustainable Living?

Sustainable living means to live in a way that supports and nourishes self as an individual within an ecosystem; as well as supporting and nourishing the ecosystem which in turn sustains us. It is a practice in mutuality. Of interdependence.

Sustainability means to live within our means. But it does not mean to live without joy. In my opinion, living sustainably is the most joyful form of living.

Because to live sustainably means to live in deep harmony with nature. And harmonious living is sensuous, creative, and full of wonder and abundance.

So, I am on a mission to encourage more people to live a sustainable life, and my unique focus is so show people how to get to sustainability by starting with their own inner life, and personal choices.

Sustainable Living is Simple Living. Living Simply is Sustainable.
